The Orsanmichele Museum is located at first and second floors of the loggia of Orsanmichele in Florence. It can be reached through the dock that connects Orsanmichele with the Palazzo dell'Arte della Lana (palace of the Wool Guild), where there is the staircase and access on via dell’Arte della Lana. The museum displays 11 of the 14 statues of the external niches of the church, with masterpieces by the greatest Florentine masters of the fifteenth century. There statues not on display are the Ghiberti's Saint Matthew, which is still in the church niche, and the San Giorgio by Donatello, located at the Bargello Museum since 1891.
It is a unique and extraordinary monument because of the civil and religious functions that still take place.
The church was originally built as a grain market; in the middle of the fourteenth century it was converted into a church. The church, boasting inside the magnificent marble tabernacle of Our Lady of Grace, still held regular function, where Masses are celebrated, as well as classical music concerts.
